Semantic Collaborative Corpora Analysis (Semantic CorA) is a lightweight virtual research environment (vre) providing a modular plattform of tools for collaborative analysis of bigger amounts of data. Semantic CorA builds upon the open-source software MediaWiki - which empowers Wikipedia – and its extension SemanticMediawiki (SMW). Tools are offered to integrate, enrich, store, query and visualize research data, which can be published in the Semantic Web and shared with other researchers.

Semantic CorA is motivated by the lack of virtual research environment in the (digital) social sciences and humanities, that offer capacities for adjustment to relevant needs with low technical barriers. But the flexibility of adjusting comes with an affordance: Semantic CorA is not an out-of-the-box solution and needs to be configured to the research project needs.

The design of Semantic CorA is based on a participatory and agile approach following concrete research practices and addressing added values. While general technological extensions for SMW are developed, the design and innovation process is driven by scholarly research projects, that invoke concrete capacities for interaction in research practice (see: In Practice).

To find out what parts of the research process are enhanced, users from the research communities of the social sciences and humanities can look at our introduction for researchers (Semantic_CorA_for_Researchers), which provides an overview of the possibilities. MediaWiki is a highly modular software - this characteristic also applies to Semantic CorA. Some adoptions are necessary to make it fit to a particular research project (Semantic_CorA_for_Administrators). While some adoptions are technically more sophisticated and based on the development of CorA extensions (Semantic_CorA_for_Developers), researchers and administrators can customize large parts of the system by means of forms and wiki templates.


March 2017 At ISI 2017 in Berlin, 13-15 March, 2017 [1] the poster "Grasping the Materializations of Practices in Digital Humanities. A Semantic Research Environment for Analyzing Exam Grading Practices in German High Schools" by Christoph Schindler, Julian Hocker, Lars Müller, Maria Melshkovea und Tobias Weller was presented.
The Satellite Workshop Information Science and the Digital Humanities [2] was held in the context of ISI 2017 [3]. Amongst others Julian Hocker and Christoph Schindler gave a talk on the topic "Facing Epistemological Diversity in Digital Humanities. Designing Virtual Research Environments for Educational Research."
November 2016 At the workshop "Neue Perspektiven in der visuellen Bildungsgeschichte" which took place in Berlin, 24-25 November, 2016 [4] Christoph Schindler gave a talk on "Interlinking Pictura" a pilot project with the aim of realizing a VRE for analyzing pictures and other content in historical books.
September 2016 The Semantic MediaWiki Conference [5] was held in Frankfurt 28-30 September, 2016 organized by DIPF and Open Semantic Data Association e. V.. The first day comprised a Tutorial Day with several experts teaching specifics of the use of Semantic MediaWiki. On the following two days the conference proceeded with Keynotes, talks and poster presentations on topics related to Semantic MediaWiki its use cases and future potentials.
